The New Year is a time of thanksgiving, I mean
not all the persons you know made it. So ordinarily you should feel lucky!.
What is very significant about this early period of the year is that it comes
after a heavy festive period with heavy responsibilities that appear new but
have always been there! The following are five very unpleasant things we
experience every New Year.
1.
YOU NOTICE YOUR COOL RELATIVES AREN’T SO COOL AFTERALL: probably you’ve spent the Christmas season catching up with your long
lost relatives with so much affection and love only seen in telemundo. Most
likely you have gone round meticulously collecting their contacts like an
athlete collect medals at the Olympics while giving yours in return especially
to the well-to-do ones. New year is here, everyone has gone back with a promise
to keep in touch and you call as promised and got this reply “ Hello you have
reached Itiakwu plumbing services, who is on the line?” no offence! You provide
the information. “How may we help you?” is the next question. It’s getting
frustrating and you say “john, obum nah, it’s me, me Thomas your cousin? Last
reply “with all due respect, this is a customer service line, have a nice day!”
hangs up.. Now that’s savage. Not so cool and it happens. Its New Year anyway
so move on!
2.
LONG QUEUES EVERYWHERE YOU GO: This is
common, talk of banks, telecommunication offices, ATMs, parks even public
toilets (shines teeth). It’s always like a thousand truck load of people just
arrived from another planet. But it’s okay, I know you’d get tired but it’s
okay. By February, normalcy will return.
3.
SKY ROCKETING OF TRANSPORTATION FARES: transportation prices increase for no obvious cause in this period,
sometimes even pump prices join in the upward movement. Look closely and you
notice that the Solomon amongst us bury their return transportation money at
their backyard immediately they travel down to the village before going on
spending spree, this is exclusively to avoid stories that touch.
4.
YOUR RELATIONS AND FRIENDS THAT PROMISED YOU MONEY (USUALLY TO START UP
BUSINESS) WILL DISAPPOINT YOU: in the
euphoric sensation of the season, you see the self acclaimed rich folks making
mouth watering promises. Every problem you bring to their table during this
season will get the reply “done, once I get back, I will send the money”... but
once they leave the village, containers will start sinking in the high sea, trailers
will start having accidents on the highway damaging goods worth trillions, and
a million other excuses that escape their wet lips. If you prove to be a second
brother to Thomas in the bible, they will change contact for you shekina!
Brother, leave matter for Matthias ooo life is per head!
5.
YOU SPEND MORE THAN YOU SPENT FOR XMAS EVEN AFTER BUDGETING LESS: Christmas season is a financial drainage system anytime, recession or
no recession. We struggle through the year hoping to make the season worthwhile
but the real expenses come during the New Year. Do the math and you notice that
generally at New Year you spend more, you pay school fees, house rent, and
hostel fees for the students, carry out major repairs at home and in the
office, invest money to revamp the business and reposition it for the year
etc... The list is endless but we all survive.
Remember
to take life easy, you only live once. Cheers!
